Vodka on the rocks with lime. I like Vodka with 7-up as well.
In the winter, a little sippin' brandy is a nice nightcap.
The two most "pure" spirits are Irish Whiskey and Vodka. Irish Whiskey is distilled three times and is also distilled using an almost smokeless fire. (As opposed to Scotch Whiskey which is distilled over a very smokey peat fire which imparts a distinctive taste.)
American (Bourbon and Whiskey) and Canadian are all distilled once but may be charcoal filtered.
Vodka is usually made from either wheat or potato. My preference is Chopin (potato). Belvedere and Grey Goose are two of the best wheat brands. I drank Stoli for years and still think it is great. Its all a matter of taste.
minor correction Scotch Whisky (no e)

one good rum I got- plantation rum. 5 yr... .
There is no substitute for single malt scotch from Scotland. No Johnnie Walker substitutes. JW and Crown (Canadian Whiskey) are girly drinks meant to be mixed with lots of sweet soda or water.
If you like the taste of ditch water, there is no substitute for Lagavulin. It's a really strong and peaty-tasting single malt scotch. On the other hand, if you like a really smooth and crisp whiskey, nothing beats Macallen or Dalwhinnie. These must be consumed neat (preferably) or with nothing other than a little water or ice if you're a scotch beginner.
Remember, this is not the coors light of drinks... it's meant to be sipped. If you're more of a chugging kind of guy (or gal), stick with your Jager bombs or cheap soda drink mixes.
I'd add Oban to that list of smooth single malts meant to be sipped neat.
Tin man is right on
Nothing smoother than Oban neat. In general the good single malt 12-16 year scotches offer a nice sip, each with their own unique taste. Also would highly recommend the trip to Scotland to do the scotch tour for those travelers out there
