Sunspots, it's not sushi, but you need to try Homeslice for pizza. You'll recognize it.

Maru on Burnet, by far my favorite in Austin.

Hmm, I've had sushi in many places around the world (including Japan). I like Tomo a lot - it's not super traditional but the guys are well-trained and the fish is fresh. My Japanese friends here like it but it's not going to be like a Ginza-style sushi restaurant you'd find in Tokyo.

Kome on Airport can be good. I don't really like much of the 'cooked' side of the menu (the kitchen seems pretty small). But on occasion their sushi can rock - and the Japanese owners are "good people." Many of the guys preparing sushi at Kome have experience at Uchi/Uchiko.

Uchi/Uchiko is good but not a place I can go to anymore on a regular basis. Prices have increased dramatically since Uchi opened a while back. Used to eat at Uchi once a week but no more. I give major props to Tyson Cole of Uchi but wish he spent more time in the kitchen at his restaurants.

Anyway, just my .02 cents.

forgot about kome. Good sushi. have not tried much cooked stuff, but I've heard their ramen at lunch is good.

Too bad Tyson can't be in the kitchen more, but he's got three, soon to be four restaurants to deal with.
In order of amazingness:

1. Uchiko (sit at bar, ask for "Kit")
2. Uchi (happy hour is rediculous)
3. Kome (hasn't blown up yet, but ex uchiko folks)

All three share the same fish monger - which is the only thing that matters.

Bar Chi changed mgmt awhile ago and fish monger, and I've gotten sick 3 times there - never again.

Mushashino is the most over rated place I've ever been globally, sorry people. It may have been top dog in "austin" before uchi then uchiko.

@austentatious lily, that's unfortunate that you feel that way :/ - someone should take you out and change your mind!
