Since this thread was originally about economics (or at least close to originally, leaving all of the back and forth out), and since I haven’t commented yet, let me take a crack at the econ.
In my opinion, here’s what we have at the fundamental level – assumption: the hobby is subject to the same market forces as, for example, Apple stock. To be honest, I’m not sure the assumption is valid, however, the grey and black markets are also governed by supply & demand, government regulation, etc., so I may not be right about that. But let’s stick to the assumption for now and say that the hobby is subject to the same market forces as all other goods and commodities. Some basic rules apply. First of all, it’s clearly not a free market because there is significant government regulation – we can argue about whether or not that’s a good thing, but it’s a fact that it exists. Gov’t regs tend to cause prices on goods, commodities, and services to rise. Then, there’s good ole supply & demand. And that’s where it seems most of the on point conversation here has been – whether or not supply (the provider side) or demand (the client side) is driving the equation. If the assumption is valid, then the answer is both. If supply is way up, then prices tend to be depressed, and folks setting their price for services will tend to find things getting slower and then will be faced with a decision. If supply is down, then prices tend to elevate. But, what do we do when supply is variable, and wildly variable as it seems to be here. There has been lots of talk about coming and going, and in my time here and on ASPD, I’ve seen a lot of both, and that’s especially true with BP. And, that’s why I’m not sure that the assumption that the hobby experiences the same market forces seen elsewhere – except when a particular stock or set of stocks is getting “churned”. In churning times, the price points of stocks is all over the place as the market forces are thrown out of balance by some unforeseen occurrence. It seems that churning is the norm for the hobby and that periods of “market stability” are rather rare, it would seem that trying to induce stability – either of supply or demand – is ultimately futile. So, the macro-analysis is that it’s a crapshoot. That just leaves the micro-level where very different forces are at play. For small business owners, for example, supply and demand is a thing, but there are lots of other forces at play that don’t generalize from one to the next – is the baby sick, has there been a kid heading off to college so the personal finances of the business owner just got knocked out of whack, did the AC and electric go out all at once, etc. Thus, lots of things that are not market forces come to bear on whether the store has a normal week, a big sale, a clearance sale, or a going-out-of-business sale. All that to say that the macro-economic tropes don’t seem to matter nearly as much as the micro ones in the hobby world; and the micro ones are, in this hobby, so highly individualized, that the supply side of the hobby is going to be all over the place and impossible to generalize from one set of experiences to the other. On the demand side, then, the appearance could well be one of incoherence because we try to apply a macro view to something that is highly micro – this great experience was inexpensive, that lousy one was pricey, etc. For the demand side, it’s just as highly a variable market with who is where, who is new, who is traveling, not to mention the prices along the way. That can be frustrating for everyone involved. But, I suppose what I take from this is that there is no way to say this is the way it has to be or that is the way it has to be, because from both sides of the supply/demand equation, it is extraordinarily variable and not directly affected by the supply/demand dyad as much as by micro factors on both sides.
