They are actually not anonymous on this board, any of us can arrange a meeting with one of them. That makes them vulnerable. We should be deferential to them, especially the good ones. Since he is a mod, I think it would be an good thing for BBD to just say, publicly "Hey I messed up, I take responsibility for your point. Accident though it was. I will learn as a mod from this error. I apologize for causing you any anxiety or grief and now lets all just move on." In my opinion it would allow both parties to ease back and withdraw with honor intact. That would also set a tone that our Mods are big enough and good enough to remain above the fray.
