he's passed away now, last year. he came to see me two weeks before he died and we had a great lunch together, he loved sea island and there we went.

we were in business together for a number of years

he was a landman, and a very good one

he happened to be black

he was great at signing up leases of bottom land owned by black families split up upteen ways, chasing everyone down to sign up all the interests, wearing his Stetson, knowing all the families and how they were related, talking up black church members he knew.

but he was always going on about conservatives and ronald reagan and how racist they were

one night in my office, he came in after being on the road chasing leases down all day and we were talking and he started up about conservatives being racists

I said, "henry, I want to ask you something, do you want your daughter (he had a great daughter, in high school at the time), do you want your daughter to marry a white guy?:
