Actually, I think there is a 3rd category-- friend with benefits-- aka fuck buddy.

In this category, there is no expectation of a monetary exchange. Additionally, there is an upfront understanding that there is not going to be any emotional attachments. The only reason for the friendship is strictly no-strings sex. Now, that doesn't mean either party can't provide gifts or services (outside of sex) to each other-- much like you'd lend a friend $50 in a crunch.

To me, an affair with a mistress is not about exchanging money for sex. As a matter of fact, I would never consider it to be an affair if there is sometime of financial arrangement involved. Affairs are more about an emotional attachment between the 2 parties. I usually equate an affair with both parties cheating on a spouse/partner. Either that or 1 person is cheating with the other party is in it for love or emotional needs.

The provider category is clear-- sex for money.

As for which is easier to forgive, I don't know. In any case, someone is cheating. I'd probably say the affair/mistress is harder to forgive because it goes to the fabric of an emotional bond between 2 people.
