Panetta to lift ban on women in combat

On topic: any woman that can meet the physical and mental requirements should be accepted in combat units, and I’ve known several who were quite capable of performing in such a role: but most were not. Unfortunately, at some point someone will begin to equate the low ratio of genuinely qualified women with a systemic bias against women and then finagle with and render invalid legitimate admission standards. In the end, that will damage and impair the over all effectiveness of such units. (BTW, people often forget a substantial number of young men do not qualify and are rejected at the recruiting office.) Originally Posted by I B Hankering

I said it before and I stand by this - as long as women have to meet the SAME physical requirements for a combat position as a man does, then I am all for it.

I agree with this for the most part. However, for the number of people that fall into the extreme category that there are, there has to be a significant amount of support in the general population. Because of that I am pretty disgusted with the group as a whole. Originally Posted by Laz

We don't know most of the actions that were taken by the CIA and other agencies behind the scenes. I would presume that for every terrorist attack that succeeded, there were many more that were prevented. Bin Laden had been operating for years far longer than only President Clinton's terms of office. If you're going to blame Presidents, all the ones back along the chain would all be responsible under your reasoning.

I served in the Marine Corps infantry in Iraq and I'm trying to imagine what it would've been like if we had women in our platoon. A huge part of the military is the bond you form training together, eating together, sleeping side by side, making fun of each others dicks in the shower, talking about all the girls you've banged, sparring in martial arts and basically just going through terrible shit together. This, comradery, is most important in direct combat units because eventually you'll be facing the threat of death together. The bonds you form in training make you fight harder for the guy beside you. Women will have separate showers, barracks, areas for going to the bathroom in the field and a whole bunch of "off limit" rules that will essentially label them as outsiders to the rest of the unit. This might effect the cohesion of the unit. Guys will be fighting over girls creating further unraveling of the team. Sexual harassment incidences will also be a problem. If at any point a woman can't perform a physical task she'll be harshly berated to an extreme by guys just waiting on the chance. And this is just training I'm referring to! Combat operations will bring a new set of problems that would be impossible to alter for a woman's presence. Remote outposts and patrol bases don't have facilities and you can't just walk away a short distance to clean yourself or go to the bathroom because you'll get shot or possibly captured. There are no separate barracks or any barracks for that matter when you're running week long operations away from your base. Many of times we had to piss in plastic bottles inside our humvees because the sniper threat was too high in fallujah and what better of a target than a marine standing still taking a piss. I haven't even gotten to the point where bullets start flying and people start dying...but I'm tired of typing. I have great respect for women and welcome their amazing contribution to our military and our nation but my humble opinion is the infantry isn't the right fit for them.

At least Bush 43 seriously went after the terrorist SOB – unlike Slick Willie the Perjuring Sexual Predator who let bin Laden slide while he was busy breaking Federal regulations stalking impressionable young employees.
