I heard somewhere a few times - Tomlin has never had a losing season. Gee that’s great isn’t it? He must be a terrific coach. Well, actually that isn’t so great. That actually IS the problem with the Steelers as a franchise. They had a great team throughout the 90s, other than one thing - a franchise QB. They had Bubby, ODonnell, Kordell, Tomczak, and Maddox - none of whom could get it done. Once they finally had a rate losing season (I believe 6-10 IIRC) they were in a position to pick the franchise QB and proceeded to win 2 Super Bowls as a result. That was 2019 trading for Fitzpatrick. Most felt like you and was hoping they would get a top ten pic to hopefully get a good QB but Tomlin’s ego/self was far more important than the future of the team.
They actually NEED another crappy season like that. No, I don’t want to see them go 5-12 or something like that, but that would be what is best in the long run. They actually had a chance to do that a few years back when Ben was out for the year, but they traded their first rounder for a safety who was great that year, and they went 8-8 as a result. Had they kept that first rounder and tanked down to 5-11 or so, they might have gotten a Justin Herbert or similar QB. Of course, knowing the “Steeler Way” they probably would have taken a LB instead.
Even more today, the QB is of paramount importance. You can beat bad and mediocre teams by running the ball and playing good defense, but it takes an explosive offense with a good passing game to beat good teams. The Steelers certainly don’t have that, and they rarely beat the really good teams (as evidenced by the recent losing streak and the lack of playoff wins over the past 7 seasons). Heck, they SAY that they want to focus on the running game, but they can’t even do that effectively. If they are do great at running, why could they not gain a half yard in three plays against a poor defense? Why are they among the lowest ranked teams in yards per carry?
They need a philosophy change. The way they play isn’t working. Tomlin doesn’t seem likely to embrace or implement such a change. He is not a bad coach (he isn’t an elite coach either), but it is time for a change. Unfortunately, that isn’t the “Steeler Way” and he will likely remain on the job until he decides to quit. Is not having a losing season really any better than what the Browns have been doing the same years.
Take Tomlin’s coaching staff philosophy compared to Noll. Noll said he surrounded himself with the best coach’s he could for the betterment of the team and himself, does anyone feel Tomlin remotely manages in that fashion.
Oh well, we more than likely get to witness being embarrassed by Baltimore. At one time along with losing to Dallas that was something most Steelers and fans hated.
Tomlin can be proud he didn’t have a losing season or did he?
