Let's do the meme the rare courtesy of attaching actual numbers to it.

#1 in homelessness — true in raw numbers, which is a neat trick when you're talking about the most populous state in the country. Per capita, Hawaii leads. And the biggest driver is rent, not whatever cartoon explanation the meme prefers. California's homelessness rose 3% last year; nationally it rose 18%. Awkward.

#1 in poverty — only if you use the Supplemental Poverty Measure, which adjusts for cost of living. By the regular federal measure, California ranks 23rd. So "#1 in poverty" turns out to mean "#1 under the version we picked because it sounded worse."

#1 in income tax — true. Also attached to some of the highest incomes in the country, a detail the meme seems to have misplaced on purpose.

#1 in gas prices and gas tax — true. Also influenced by California fuel blends, cap-and-trade, and refinery constraints. But obviously "blue state bad" is much easier than understanding how anything works.

#1 in retail theft — not really. California has a serious organized retail crime problem, but it does not lead every retail theft metric. Close enough for meme work, where "kind of" is basically the gold standard.

#1 in illiteracy — overstated. The ranking depends heavily on methodology and is skewed by a large non-English-speaking population. Nuance, as usual, was found dead at the scene.

#1 in budget deficit — true in raw dollars. Also the largest state economy in the country, which tends to produce larger raw-dollar everything. Big state, big numbers — very mysterious.

And then there's the list the meme somehow forgot to include:

#1 in GDP — $4.25 trillion, largest sub-national economy on Earth. #1 in venture capital — 62% of all US venture capital. #1 in Fortune 500 companies — 58 headquartered there.

So yes, the meme found some real problems. Congratulations. It just somehow managed to leave out the part where California is also an economic giant. Almost like the goal wasn't understanding anything, just assembling the saddest possible slideshow and calling it analysis.
