Billions for our farmers????? The billions in subsidies for the farmers came out of the pockets of U.S. taxpayers. Or were added onto the national debt, depending on how you look at it. China, retaliating for the tariffs on their exports to the USA, bought agricultural products from places like Brazil and Argentina instead of the U.S. So we had to bail out the farmers.

I sense sarcasm in your post. Did you conveniently forget about the 1930 Smoot-Hawley Tariff Act? Think about how much worse the Great Depression might have been without it.

The tariffs were mostly paid by U.S. importers, not by the Chinese, and passed onto American consumers through higher prices. The Chinese, by lowering profit margins, only absorbed a small fraction of the headline amount of the tariffs.

The Chinese took whatever it was they were exporting to the USA and sent it other places, Europe or wherever. And built factories in places like Vietnam to be able to export to the USA without the tariffs.

The Chinese don’t have some kind of unsecured debt. They are in possession of instruments like bonds which they will simply sell or dump on the market crushing the value of US bonds. You seem to think it’s just a IOU or credit card with a trillion dollar limit that’s been run up and the Chinese will simply be left with the debt if we stop paying the card. But that’s Trumpy logic. Like when Mexico tarrifs provided all that revenue to the US.
