those aren't Ivy League degrees.. they are 7th grade books that Lucas' Mom kept, given that he was the first in his family to attend Middle School.

In Texas, the number of hospitializations continues to climb.

Texas coronavirus hospitalizations surge 11% in a single day

The total Wednesday marks the eighth new high in the state in less than two weeks.

The number of people sickened with Covid-19 across Texas’ hospitals hit a new high Wednesday, surging about 11% in a single day.

There are 2,793 patients hospitalized with a coronavirus infection in the state, up from 2,518 patients reported Tuesday, according to updated data from the Texas Department of State Health Services. The total Wednesday marks the eighth new high in the state in less than two weeks. Texas coronavirus hospitalizations are now up more than 84% since Memorial Day as the state continues to reopen.

Coronavirus hospitalizations, like new cases and deaths, are considered a key measure of the outbreak because it helps scientists gauge how severe it may be. In recent weeks, some state and federal leaders have downplayed a recent rise in cases and hospitalizations across the U.S., tying it to an increase in testing. (But wait. This from lexie and his leaders on 6-12-2020
Abbott reports ...

increased testing does not equal to "increased cases" just more positive tests. ... ....and that hospitalization related to the virus are DOWN!
(they were actually up when lexie lied and said they were down) Suddenly, 5 days later, they claim that increased testing is equal to a rise in the number of cases and hospitalizations. Which is it? You can't get a straight answer out of the moron brigade.
And there is that trump word. Downplay.

Move along folks. Nothing to see here.

During a press briefing on Tuesday, Gov. Greg Abbott defended Texas’ reopening plan by pointing to the total available hospital beds and the ability to create surge capacity if necessary.

There were 13,815 total beds available as of Wednesday and 1,473 total intensive care unit beds available for critically ill patients, down from 14,993 total beds and 1,675 ICU beds Tuesday, according to state data.
While the increased hospital occupancy does raise concerns, the state’s hospital capacity remains at “the lowest threat level,” Abbott said. “We have plenty of room to expand beds, there are thousands of hospital beds that are available as we speak right now,” he said.

Abbott said that there has been an increase in reported Covid-19 cases since Memorial Day and the increase is likely due to people who didn’t follow recommended social distancing practices. He also added that some of the rise could be because the state has expanded testing, especially in group homes and correctional facilities.

Angela Clendenin, an epidemiologist at Texas A&M University, who’s involved in the local contact tracing effort, said Wednesday that the recent uptick is “concerning.”

“We don’t want it to get out of hand,” Clendenin said.

Dr. John Hellerstedt, commissioner of the Texas Department of State Health Services, said Tuesday that there are residents who believe it’s not important to continue practicing recommended health precautions against Covid-19 and “nothing could be further from the truth.” These measures include wearing face coverings, washing hands and maintaining distance from one another.

“The possibility that things could flare up again and produce a resurgence of Covid-19 that would be a stress on our health-care system is still very real,” Hellerstedt said.

Infectious disease specialists and scientists note that the U.S. and other parts of the world will likely continue to see a rise in cases until there is a proven treatment or effective vaccine.

“Before a vaccine becomes widely available, we can only hope that ... the pathogen becomes less virulent and people come to treat it like seasonal influenza,” said Yanzhong Huang, a public health researcher at the Council on Foreign Relations and director of the Center for Global Health Studies at Seton Hall University.

On Friday, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said states may need to reimplement the strict social distancing measures that were put in place earlier this year if U.S. coronavirus cases rise “dramatically.”

“Right now, communities are experiencing different levels of transmission occurring, as they gradually ease up onto the community mitigation efforts and gradually reopen,” the CDC’s deputy director for infectious diseases, Jay Butler, told reporters during a press briefing.

Texas reports highest number of hospitalized coronavirus patients since outbreak began

On Monday, Texas recorded its highest daily number of patients hospitalized due to the coronavirus — for the fourth day in a row. The record-breaking numbers come as the state continues to reopen its economy.

The state's Department of Health and Human Services reported 2,326 lab-confirmed COVID-19 patients who are currently in Texas hospitals, bypassing the previous record high on Sunday of 2,287. There are currently 51,365 total staffed hospital beds in the state, with 14,525 hospital beds available. Only 1,626 beds in Intensive Care Units are currently available in the state.

Overall, there have been 89,108 cases of COVID-19 reported in Texas, with an estimated 28,036 active cases and an estimated 59,089 recoveries. Nearly 2,000 people have died in the state as a result of the disease.
On June 3, Texas Governor Greg Abbott issued an executive order to announce the third phase of reopening the state. The state has moved forward with the reopening plan, with restaurants being permitted to increase capacity to 75% and nearly all businesses allowed to operate at 50% capacity.

Abbott said Friday that he didn't see a "real need to ratchet back the opening of businesses in the state," partly due to the number of hospital beds open, the Texas Tribune reported.

The governor added that he is "concerned, but not alarmed" by the test numbers, citing the high volume of tests being conducted. The state has conducted nearly 1.5 million tests.
Harris County, the largest county by population in Texas, is currently reporting 16,778 cases, the most in the state. The county includes Houston, a city hit hard by the disease.
In Houston, officials are warning that they may need to order citizens back home and open a coronavirus hospital at a football complex in the city as cases surge. As of Friday, the Houston area is at what officials are calling a "Code Orange" — meaning an uncontrolled level of transmission of the disease.

"We've already uncorked the genie. We got our wish, which was to end the home quarantine orders," said Dr. Jeremy Finkelstein, an emergency medical specialist at Houston Methodist. "And now we're seeing people treat that as if COVID-19 is no longer an issue — and that's far from the fact."

Texas isn't the only state seeing high numbers of hospitalizations due to the disease. Fourteen states have experienced an increase in hospitalizations since Memorial Day, and the coronavirus death toll is now expected to reach nearly 170,000 by October. That's more than 50,000 additional deaths over the next several months."

In Texas, where hospitalizations have increased 66 percent since Memorial Day, the mayors of nine major cities are urging Gov. Greg Abbott (R) to grant them permission to set their own requirements for mask-wearing. The state reported that 2,793 covid-19 patients were being hospitalized on Wednesday, a new single-day record.

It's not over yet. Keep wearing your masks for a while longer. Be responsible.
And no, this isn't a "protest bump". That will show up in a week, week and a half.

"Coronavirus hospitalizations rise sharply in several states following Memorial Day
Why covid-19 isn't going away anytime soon
The pathway to overcome the coronavirus is long, winding and full of hurdles. Here's how the public can help. (Monica Akhtar/The Washington Post)

As the number of new coronavirus cases continues to increase worldwide, and more than a dozen states and Puerto Rico are recording their highest averages of new cases since the pandemic began, hospitalizations in at least nine states have been on the rise since Memorial Day.

In Texas, North and South Carolina, California, Oregon, Arkansas, Mississippi, Utah and Arizona, there are an increasing number of patients under supervised care since the holiday weekend because of coronavirus infections. The spikes generally began in the past couple weeks and in most states are trending higher.

Data from states that are reporting some of their highest seven-day averages of new cases is disproving the notion that the country is seeing such a spike in cases solely because of the continued increase in testing, according to data tracked by The Washington Post.

Many of these states that have experienced an increase in cases have also had an increase in hospitalizations, with a handful of states also nearing bed capacity. Hospitalizations nationwide are difficult to track, with states reporting hospitalization numbers in varying ways, or not at all. Even states that do report hospitalization numbers may not have always received complete data from every hospital in the state at the time of their reports.

14 states and Puerto Rico hit highest seven-day average of new coronavirus infections

Texas has reported 75,616 cases since the pandemic began, and in 10 of the past 15 days, the state’s seven-day average of new cases has increased.

As of Tuesday, it has reported two consecutive days of record-breaking coronavirus hospitalizations. The state has seen a 36 percent increase in new cases since Memorial Day, with a record 2,056 current hospitalizations as of early Tuesday afternoon. It was up from a high of 1,935 hospitalizations on Monday.
Texas was one of the first states to relax their stay-at-home order. Businesses started to open up in early May. According to the state’s health department, Texas has 28.14 percent of available hospital beds open, and 1,723 available intensive care unit beds.

"Number of Texans hospitalized with coronavirus hits all-time high as experts say cases are likely to continue increasing
For the third day in a row, Texas has reported a record number of patients hospitalized with the new coronavirus, a metric Gov. Greg Abbott has said he’s watching as businesses continue reopening and limits on their operations are loosened.

Data released Wednesday by the Texas Department of State Health Services shows 2,153 people were hospitalized with COVID-19, up from 2,056 the day before, and 1,935 Monday. Before the last few days, the previous high was May 5, when 1,888 people were hospitalized.

The figures come a little more than a month since Abbott's statewide stay-at-home order ended and he began a phased reopening of businesses. It also comes about two weeks after Memorial Day. The incubation time for the virus. And it spiked now? Go figure. The hospitalizations have increased some 42% since then."

"Texas Shatters Record For New Coronavirus Cases

Texas reported over 2,500 new coronavirus cases Wednesday—the highest reported in a single day by far since the pandemic started—as the number of Texans currently admitted to hospitals for coronavirus climbed to a new record for the third straight day, as the state, which had one of the fastest and most aggressive reopening timelines in the nation, has seen a surge in infections about two weeks after Memorial Day."

Hospitalizations of patients infected with the novel coronavirus have hit a record high in Texas for the third day in a row.
Wednesday, the Texas Department of State Health Services reported 2,153 patients are hospitalized with COVID-19 — an increase of 97 patients from Tuesday when 2,056 were hospitalized and 218 more than the 1,935 people hospitalized on Monday.

Hospitalizations have been on an upward trend since late May, and have increased by nearly 42.5% since the 1,511 patients hospitalized on Memorial Day. Before Monday, the previous record for hospitalizations was on May 5 when 1,888 patients were hospitalized."
