Companies are not in the business of raising wages to combat illegal immigration. They want their labor cost as low as possible. Take away the illegals and they will likely move their operation to another country. Do you want the US totally dependant on foreign countries for all their produce Originally Posted by BigLouiemost of the produce will eventually be automated or mechanized.

Any such rise in food costs will be off set by money not spent on perpetual unemployment for those forced out of the labor market by illegals who are depressing wages and money not spent on providing social services for illegals who now overburden the system. Originally Posted by I B Hankering

As part of that plan Vanderbilt intended to take over the Erie Railroad controlled by Daniel Drew, James Fisk and Jay Gould. After Vanderbilt had been swindled by Drew, Fisk and Gould in a stock fraud that prevented Vanderbilt from buying the Erie Railroad, he decided to undercut the market by cutting freight prices he charged for the railroads he already owned. Vanderbilt believed he could recoup his losses by setting the market price after he had established his railroad monopoly. Of course, Drew, Fisk and Gould responded by cutting the fares charged by the Erie. This tit-for-tat price cutting went on for a while, but then at one point Vanderbilt realized that the Erie RR was still charging a higher rate than he was, but it was still in business. Vanderbilt then discovered why. Drew, Fisk and Gould were buying freight (cattle) and shipping the cattle on Vanderbilt's railroads and making a considerable profit off the cheaply transported freight while Vanderbilt continued to suffer a financial loss. Eventually, however, the Erie did fail.
Without competition, monopolistic ventures (as exemplified by Vanderbilt) can charge what they want. It would be worse for this country if certain of those ventures were foreign owned and controlled.

Yea...that is wtf Trump is doing! You've drifted from discussing subsidies for farmers to discussing a real estate magnate. As originally conceived, farm subsides were meant to cover the difference between what a farmer could and would produce for the market if left to his own devices and the amount the government directed him to produce in order to regulate and keep the market stable by throttling over-production. Then there are the subsidies, e.g., in the sugar industry, to bolster the domestic market against foreign competition. FWIW, most people working in the sugar industry are not multi-millionaires like Trump.
Or he could be further lining the pockets of the rich and connected..
My bet is , it is not the former. Originally Posted by WTF
