You just answered the question. No a person cannot change their genetics. So if a person is born with the natural instinct to be or pursue a certain gender, how are they to change? A person who is clearly genetically, physically and functionally a male or female and defies what he or she is naturally can't really change a thing, other than what is in their mind and what medical science can actually achieve. The chromosomal arrangement is such that these individuals may have an X X or YY chromosome or both causing them to have both sexual organs. The cause of this developmental anomaly is relatively undetermined. As far as what a hermaphrodite may align themselves with male or female, I would say it depends a great deal how they were brought up and their self image.
