Nonetheless, England, the US, France, and Germany all suppressed reports of the disease to prevent the enemy from knowing about each nation's weaknesses. Only Spain, which was neutral during WWI reported freely on the epidemic. Other nations reported on the Spanish news reports about the flu epidemic and the disease was improperly named "the Spanish Flu".

Had things not changed, that likely would have been the end of it and nobody would really know about the Spanish flu.

But things DID change. The virus mutated in Europe in the summer of 1918 and became far deadlier. Troops were still being shipped around the world, so the now deadlier disease continued to spread and killed huge numbers of people in the fall of 1918.

In 1919, the disease was still deadly, but the war ended and there was far less movement of people. So, the number of deaths dropped off and the pandemic ended in 1920. But only after at least 20 million died worldwide.

Most pandemics have a second wave and in most cases, the second wave is actually less harmful than the first. The Spanish Flu was a big exception.

Let's hope the second wave of the coronavirus this fall is less harmful.

I wonder if this is basically a city virus. it seems to be concentrated in cities.

a reader in the advocate newspaper opinion section pointed out that in 1918:
- little news media
- few automobiles
- people rose in morning, slept at dark
- few groceries stores
- no radios
- people lived far apart.
basically, they were already quarantined.

K 90210 - do you have a reference on the statement :
The Spanish Flu started in early 1918 and one of the earliest cases was actually in the USA.??

"One of the earliest cases" - is not proof Spanish flu originated in the US.
Couple of sites - both state the country of origin is unclear:

https://www.history.com/news/why-was...he-spanish-flu

While it’s unlikely that the “Spanish Flu” originated in Spain, scientists are still unsure of its source. France, China and Britain have all been suggested as the potential birthplace of the virus, as has the United States, where the first known case was reported at a military base in Kansas on March 11, 1918.

https://www.cdc.gov/flu/pandemic-res...ic-history.htm

The 1918 influenza pandemic was the most severe pandemic in recent history. It was caused by an H1N1 virus with genes of avian origin. Although there is not universal consensus regarding where the virus originated, it spread worldwide during 1918-1919. In the United States, it was first identified in military personnel in spring 1918.
