In the 1960s, laws were changed to limit the ability of state and local officials to admit people into mental health hospitals. This lead to budget cuts in both state and federal funding for mental health programs. As a result, states across the country began closing and downsizing their psychiatric hospitals
best I can find, I keeps asking NYS and when, all I get is for all the country other than RR 1967 in CA, Late 60's and 70's most in ROC closed and few down sized a lot.

mmmm fuck up by both party's as looks Nation wide. Many becoming on the street n homeless.

The institutes were horror centers and they couldnt come up with a way to keep them open and not get sued by blood sucking lawyers. Only option was shut them down. Probably half of them were happier and better off. Get their own place or an assisted home. Others well...

De-institutionalism started in the mid 50’s under Eisenhower, and continued through subsequent administrations.

Carter passed the MHSA in 1980, just before leaving office. It funded support for mental health patients who were no longer in institutions.

Reagan’s repeal through Reconciliation in 1981 defunded the local organizations that were supporting the de-institutionalized mental health patients….basically hanging them out to dry.
