Voters trust Republicans more on major issues

Who tried to moderate the thread?

Clearly that was satirical, but it should absolutely be more difficult to vote. Show up on election day, pass a short exam that indicates you have a basic understanding of government, and you’re good to go. I’m safe. You’re safe. I’d assume most posters here, given that they’re actively engaged in political banter, are safe as well. These are the kinds of people who SHOULD be voting, not those who don’t know the 3 branches of government or think July 4th is about hotdogs and fireworks. The country is run by idiots because they’re put there by their own kind.

The thread is about who voters trust more. It's obvious, based on national popular voting, Americans trust Democrats more. Republicans haven't won a national popular vote since 2004.

Keep in mind that the elections are a much better indication of who the American voters trust than some small sample size poll is. Originally Posted by 1pittsburgh

So please tell me, what exactly was the actual sample size used in the poll? Or should I say, in the POLLS, since the OP's graph plots how poll sentiment on this particular question has fluctuated over time from 1986 to now.

I assume you looked up the sample size number, right?

Except the national election isn't a "poll" - it's an actual vote.

The purpose of a poll is to measure voter sentiment IN BETWEEN ACTUAL VOTES. It's a snapshot in time - it seeks to measure how the public would be likely to vote IF AN ELECTION WAS HELD TODAY!

If you want to attack a poll intelligently and claim it isn't accurate or reliable, you would have to find fault in its methodology. As anyone with a background in statistics can attest, a random sample of 800-1000 eligible voters is in fact quite reliable, within the margin of error specified by the polling company. You claim the poll is invalid because of its "small sample size". Yet when I asked you exactly how small it was, you admit you don't even know! Seems to me you're the one who doesn't "understand a basic concept like sample size"!

Berry was right - you irrationally dismiss this poll because you don't like its results. If the only "poll" that matters is the one on Election Day, then why do both major political parties spend hundreds of millions of dollars conducting all manner of opinion polls in between election dates? Why don't you call up the DNC and tell them they're wasting their money!?

An intelligent criticism of this poll (other than one based on methodology) might have pointed out that 1) voter sentiment clearly fluctuates over time, and 2) the Dems still have 13 months left to sway the majority of voters away from their current conviction that Republicans are better at managing the economy than Democrats are.
It absolutely is a poll. When you vote you go to your polling place:

It's the biggest poll that we have, and the most indicative of who the voters trust. That's the whole point of this thread, and the popular vote of the presidential election is by far the most accurate way we have of seeing who the American voters trust, and it's been 19 years since they trusted a republican more, and that was only because most were not yet aware that Dick and Bush lied.

Did you miss the OP? The graph below clearly shows that since 2014, Republicans have been trusted more on this metric than Dems, except for a brief hiccup during the pandemic:

By the way, the graph also shows the Dems had a sizable advantage over the Republicans on this issue back in 2007-09, when we were suffering through the Great Recession under Bush. Were those polls inaccurate, unreliable, and meaningless too?
