North Korea?????

China isn't going to sit this one out. They have a "Friendship Agreement" with North Korea. They signed this right after the Korean War. The agreement is valid until 2021.

Japan occupied Korea from 1895 to WW 2. Brutal occupation that sent the ladies off to be (comfort girls) to serve the Japanese men, and forced the men to serve in the military. Some Koreans live in Japan, and they are viewed as 2nd class criminals.

I was stationed in Korea for 3 years, 1 before 9/11 and 2 after and all this has happened before with NK. Normally they get all froggy when we do exercises there, I would not be concerned over them doing anything as I am under the impression that a nuclear sub sitting off the cost with 240 warheads kinda ruins your day.
cheers

Misawahawk we have tanks there - thats what I was there for.

And the briefing we got on day one was about rockets....not artillery. In fact, the width of the dmz was determined by attempting to make it too wide for artillery to have effective range (1950 standards). This is why rockets are the favorite.

Everybody is too fixated on our ability to countrstrike and kick their ass. A few years ago the norks sunk a sub - nothing happened. Not long after the norks bombed an island - nothing happened. Koreans were killed in these attacks...yet nothing happened.

What the little fella in Korea is trying to figure out right now is 'how far can I go'. How tired of war is the US....can I decimate a town or military base without retaliation. We won't strike back without South Korean approval. The Russians would block any UN action. And China is still in an alliance with the Norks. And oh yeah....we're broke and the administration doesn't have a stomach for war. I think the little guy could destroy a motorpool full of us tanks and kill five hundred us soldiers....and all we'll do is bomb a few launch sites (after the rockets are spent).

Sounds like China is getting a little tired of NK antics.

Misawahawk,

Yes, there are both, but the troop numbers have gone down over the years so I would not think that they are the deterrent they used to be.
