Review: Lala @ Jessica's Bar

For the guys in Dallas, there's a relatively safe cantina at Forest and Webb Chapel next to a Caribbean grill. It's Asian-owned, but definitely a cantina with primarily Spanish-speaking clientele. It might be a good place to get your feet wet. I've been there by myself on a crowded Saturday and never saw any problems. It helps that there's an armed security presence.

Keep in mind when I'm there, that I've been in MUCH worse places in Mexico. I learned a long time ago that if I'm not looking for trouble and don't look like some scared gringo, then I've never had trouble. I've hung out in bars in Nuevo Laredo, Ojinaga, and Juarez that are cartel strongholds -- each time I was ignorant of the situation until later -- without the least bit of trouble. Probably lucky, but I do believe that not appearing nervous makes a difference because the bad guys don't know what to make of me. Originally Posted by FWTex

I agree on more recent info. I am a bit of a chicken to go solo. I just need/want someone else there. A second set of common sense can't hurt. After laughing my ass of with ThatHotNurse at some of your more funny post, I want to buy you a beer some time.

Cantina 101

I'm in no way a cantina expert, but I have been to a few in the area as well as some in Mexico. Every time has been by myself both on a busy Saturday night as well as on a slow weekday evening.

My number one concern as well as yours should be safety. Use common sense like where to park and always sit at the bar or really close to it.

The guys at these places are the same ones you see working construction, landscaping, in restaurant kitchens, etc.

Don't dress flashy and everything else is fine. Some of the guys go there straight from work, even after a long hot day of working outside.

The girls vary in all shapes, sizes, ages, etc. There is a way better selection on the weekends. From my experience the younger girls speak perfect English. The older ones may only speak Spanish.

You'll walk in, a girl will approach you and ask if you want a drink. She'll then ask if you'll buy her one. If she's not to your liking just tell her you're waiting for a friend or something else not being rude.

This is the business model behind a cantina. Your beer will be about 3 bucks and the girl's will be about 12. The more beers guys buy her the more money she makes.

Once the beer runs out so does the lady. My preference is to go about two hours before closing because they'll be hammered by then. I let my hands wander after the first drink and that gives me a "feel" for what more may be available.

Don't be disappointed if you don't score. While some of the ladies do offer more most do not.

The experience being sold is walking into a bar to grab a beer and having attractive ladies sit with you to chat or play a game of pool while having a great time flirting and being touchy.

I've read stuff about taxi dancing in these kinds of joints.. but I never understood how they are able to drive a Taxi through the small doorways, nor why anyone would dance with a Taxi
Let's make a trip. Streangth in numbers.
I never heard of a taxi dance hall before. This Wiki article was interesting. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taxi_dance_hall

After reading about this bar for quite awhile I decided to stop in with a friend of mine last Saturday night around 12:15am.

It was surprisingly slow inside, with a sprinkling of women who seemed well past their 40's, and the guys, all Mexican that I could see, drinking at the bar.

No girls on tables, no cuties looking to be asked to dance, etc. My friend and I were the only white guys around, but it wasn't an uncomfortable atmosphere, per se, they just looked shocked to see us. We smiled all around, had a beer, and hit the door.

There was a young 25ish young lady in the parking lot freshening up her perfume when we walked out - she asked us why we were leaving and we talked to her for a minute but told her we'd see her another time.

I look forward to hearing of a better outcome that will make my buddy and I want to return.
I'll be in the DFW area this weekend are there any other cantinas in the area you guys recommend?
