I cannot really disagree with your post. There were, I am certain, a lot of "anything is better than what we have" votes cast, as there were in 2008. That is exactly why I do not think the Dems had a "mandate" in 2008 ( thought they acted as if they did), and why I do not believe the Reps have one now.
