Remembering this date five years ago.

I find it highly disturbing that so many people are willing to disregard the evidence of an insurrection merely because they were so bad at it.

The truth of the matter is that the Trump, assisted by many, pushed a false narrative of a stolen election through the use of “fixed” voting machines.

His claims, amplified by the FOX network, convinced republicans every where to not just show up at the Capital on January 6th but to activate the electoral machinery in many states to provide a slate of alternate electors whom he was going to use to overturn the results of a free and fair election.

All this culminated with a riot at the capitol building with the clear intention of stopping the process of confirming the results of the election and installing Biden as President.

Just because the attempt failed doesn’t mean that the rioters on January 6th weren’t engaging in an insurrection. It certainly doesn’t mean that Trump isn’t guilty of being the instigator of the crime. Originally Posted by txdot-guy

If Trump has done anything in the wake of this, it's been to relieve overcrowding at some federal correctional facilities.

The Democrats want to incarcerate the January 6 protestors and rioters. The Republicans want to incarcerate the Black Lives Matter and ANTIFA crowd. Democrats would jail all the Republicans, and vice versa. Republicans want to imprison young black men and Democrats want to do the same to white businessmen.

They need to think about who's going to pay the taxes when they put half the taxpayers in jail. The USA has the 4th highest incarceration rate in the world, after El Salvador, Cuba and Rwanda. We have about 2.5X more people in jail per capita than Venezuela or Iran. Thirty-three percent of African American males have felony convictions. Try getting a good job with one of those.

Our criminal justice system is out of control. Don't we have enough people behind bars already? Why put nonviolent January 6 participants in jail? Or give Tina Peters, the Mesa County, Colorado Clerk, 9 years for allowing unauthorized personnel to look for fraud related to the 2024 election?

TxDot brings up some strong points, although IMHO they're more related to events and actions around January 6, like alternate electors, instead of January 6 itself. John Eastman, Rudy Giuliani and Sidney Powell never spent a night in jail. Maybe they should have.

Certainly Merrick Garland and Jack Smith should have moved faster. I wouldn't favor jailing an ex-president, but maybe a little time in an ankle bracelet at Mar a Lago would have been a good idea. I understand the food is pretty good there. It would have made the 2024 election even more entertaining!

I can’t tell if you’re joking or not. Tiny is correct in the fact that the US jails individuals at higher rates and for longer sentences than most. But there is a giant difference between jailing someone for 20 years for buying and selling (forbidden topic), and someone who got 41 months for attempting to overturn an election.

The Shaman may have been deluded but serving 16 months for participating in an attempt to overturn the state is not egregious at all.

The people who really failed in the aftermath of January 6th is the Republican Senate. By failing to impeach Donald Trump for his part in the attempted insurrection they basically told their constituents that our democracy is less important than their own political power. They had the responsibility to put the constitution and our democracy above the political fray and they just didn’t do it.

There is a huge difference between what happened in 2016 and what Trump and the MAGA party tried to do in 2020.

In 2016 some approved electors tried to vote for a candidate who lost the popular vote. So called faithless electors.

In 2020 Trump attempted to replace the current electors with ones who would vote him into office. It’s called trying to steal the election. Read up on it by clicking the link below.

Well it’s hard to argue against that. And for most I would agree. However Trump’s blanket pardon for every person and his attempt to rewrite the history of what happened that day is both ethically and morally wrong.
