Trump Organization Being Criminally Investigated by NY AG: Probe 'No Longer Purely Civil'

New York prosecutors have reportedly told the Trump Organization that their criminal investigation "is no longer purely civil."

Fabien Levy, press secretary to New York Attorney General Letitia James, told CNN, "We have informed the Trump Organization that our investigation into the Organization is no longer purely civil in nature."

"We are now actively investigating the Trump Organization in a criminal capacity, along with the Manhattan DA," he added. "We have no additional comment."

James had previously launched a civil investigation into the business dealings of the former president and the Trump Organization. Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance has been leading a criminal probe looking into whether Trump and associates committed tax and insurance fraud. Both investigations have taken place over the course of more than two years.

Vance's investigation has included allegations that the Trump Organization may have underreported the value of its New York properties in order to lower tax burdens, while overstating the values to secure loans, according to Reuters. James' civil investigation, which is continuing in parallel to the criminal investigation, has focused on similar matters.

In February, the Supreme Court rejected Trump's attempt to block Vance from viewing eight years of his tax returns as part of the investigation. Trump, who has been involved in multiple legal battles attempting to keep his tax records secret, dubbed the decision a "continuation of the greatest political Witch Hunt in the history of our country."

"The Supreme Court never should have let this 'fishing expedition' happen, but they did," Trump said in a statement at the time. "This is something which has never happened to a President before, it is all Democrat-inspired in a totally Democrat location, New York City and State, completely controlled and dominated by a heavily reported enemy of mine, Governor Andrew Cuomo."

The former president's sons Eric Trump and Donald Trump Jr. are also involved in the investigation since they run the Trump Organization. Eric Trump and Trump Organization Chief Financial Officer Allen Weisselberg have already been deposed by James as part of the civil investigation.

Trump's former personal attorney Michael Cohen, now an avowed enemy of the former president, has been interviewed as part of Vance's criminal investigation on multiple occasions.

"As more documents are reviewed by the NYAG and NYDA, it appears that the troubles for Donald Trump just keep on coming!" Cohen tweeted on Tuesday in response to news of James' criminal investigation. "Soon enough, Donald and Associates will be held responsible for their actions."

Newsweek reached out to the New York Attorney's General Office, the Manhattan District Attorney's Office and the Trump Organization for comment.
