Demand Amnesty for Long Island Sex Workers

http://www.redumbrellaproject.com/pr...ont-prosecute/

"In the week leading up to December 17, 2010 – the International Day to End Violence Against Sex Workers – the remains of four women who were killed while doing sex work were discovered on a beach in Long Island. Over the past two weeks, the remains of six more bodies have been found in the same area. Suffolk County Police Commissioner Richard Dormer has requested that anyone involved in the sex industry who may have information about the disappearance of colleagues come forward and share this information with the police. But there remains a rather large barrier: prostitution is criminalized, and sex workers have no guarantee that we will be protected from prosecution if we step forward. Therefore, we are calling for amnesty for all prostitution related offenses in Suffolk County until the killer is apprehended.

"If you are a sex worker or an ally of sex workers, please contact the office of the Suffolk County Police Commissioner and District Attorney and make this request. The Police Commissioner has been speaking publicly about this issue, but the DA has the ultimate authority to grant amnesty. We especially need people who live in the New York City / Long Island area, especially Suffolk county, to make calls and send emails. In your request, you can feel free to personalize with information about your experiences or feelings about these cases. . . ."

I've been reading around the LI discoveries and its dreadful. Very scary. Another CL killing spree. Ugh. I hope they find whoever this is soon. Good to hear about the amnesty....there is a definite need to work together on this.

This was scary when it was first being reported in December and sadly it gets more horrible.
This can't be good: "

This reminds me of Jerry Orbach from the old Law & Order walking up to a group of street walkers saying, "Don't worry mam, we're not Vice, we're Homicide. When was the last time you saw xyz (shows picture). Don't worry he can't hurt you, he's in the morgue."
By "this can't be good" I meant it will have repercussions for Boards like this.

I don't buy the amnesty, protection verbiage if they are using that to lure these women out. If they really want to get useful information they need to have an unbiased mediator (an attorney) perhaps who can relay all pertinent information to the police without divulging the women's real identities.

Albeit you have to sort through some of the threads to get to the really useful information it does provide some minimal amount of security for all those involved. I am concerned that this may lead to laws shutting down our only means of communication / information.

Once again, the powers that be refuse to see that it is the very laws against prostitution that have created most of the harm toward women and men in the industry.

Does it overstep the boundaries with which people have the right to express themselves on boards like these? How much money and time will the board owner spend for a legal defense to keep and maintain such a board / forum like this? Would they be willing to give up their anonymity to defend it?

My guess is...."Morrie", "Humilia-whatever" & "Italy-bidonk-a-donk" together wouldn't squeeze a lemon in a cocktail in the RW. But, if you're stupid enough to make idle threats about somebody...and then something actually happens to that somebody...you look like even MORE of an idiot than usual....

As others have pointed out...that's all the opening the thought police need to lower the boom on everybody.....
