Sanders has a bizarre radical past that Trump and Republicans would use to destroy him

https://news.yahoo.com/sanders-bizar...100054815.html

The Iowa Democratic caucuses might have ended in fiasco, but they did produce two winners: Pete Buttigieg and Bernie Sanders. The senator from Vermont could well triumph in this week's New Hampshire primary and, with his fiercely loyal activist base and fundraising advantage, many analysts believe he is the Democrat best positioned to win his party’s nomination. Yet unless one is rooting for a second term for President Donald Trump, that would be a political disaster of the first magnitude.

The progressives pressing the senator's case may not care, but the general electorate will: Sanders has a bizarre radical past. It would not only set him back on his heels in a general election campaign, it would completely neutralize the potent charge that Trump cozies up to Russian President Vladimir Putin and other dictators.

Just consider, to begin with, one issue from Sanders’ political career, highlighted by the historian Ronald Radosh in The Daily Beast. When Iranian Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini and his minions seized dozens of American hostages in 1979 and held 52 of them for 444 days, Americans across the spectrum were united in outrage and in seeking their safe return. Sanders, at the time, was a backer of an obscure Marxist-Leninist political party that pledged support for the Iranian theocracy and defended the hostage-taking. In line with Iranian propaganda, the party alleged that the captured diplomats and other U.S. Embassy workers were likely CIA agents.

This at the very moment when those Americans were being abused and tortured for precisely that charge.

Associating with the radical fringe

Sanders, who was a Vermont elector for the party in 1980 and spoke at rallies for its candidates at least twice, in 1982 and 1984, has never had to answer either for these views or for his association with this radical fringe group.

Trump, who has made challenging the Iranian theocracy a centerpiece of his foreign policy, is going to have a field day with this single item. “Crazy Bernie” is his stupid moniker for Sanders. Unfortunately, it has genuine substance to back it.

If support for this group was a completely isolated moment from Sanders' past, perhaps somehow he could get away from it by calling it a youthful indiscretion. The trouble is, however, that he was in his late 30s at the time. Moreover, he has never addressed this chapter of his past to explain how and why and when his views have changed. Nor was it a one-off. Whatever Sanders says now, at a moment when he is trying to compete in the American mainstream, he has made a lifelong career of ingratiating himself with anti-American radicals of various left-wing stripes.

Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., campaigns in Manchester, New Hampshire, on Feb. 8, 2020.

The pro-Trump Wall Street Journal editorial page is already on the case. In a piece headlined “The socialist evolution of Bernie Sanders,” a Journal editor named Elliot Kaufman traces Sanders' on-again, off-again support for left-wing dictatorships, from Cuba’s Fidel Castro to Nicaragua’s Daniel Ortega of Sandinista fame. As Kaufman wrote, in 1985, as mayor of Burlington, Sanders visited Nicaragua: On returning to Vermont, “he called its Soviet-backed leader, Daniel Ortega, ‘impressive’ and said it ‘makes sense’ for the regime to suppress newspapers given the threat from the U.S.-supported Contra insurgency.”

The Journal is fair, and Kaufman added that Sanders has lately “tempered his enthusiasm for leftist Third World tyrants.” But does anyone expect Trump to be fair?

Don't make it easy for Trump: Forget Iowa in 2024, don't nominate a socialist in 2020, and time for 5 Democrats to go

Consider Cuba. Cuba’s Marxist-Leninist revolution has been another one of Sanders' pet causes. In 1989, he issued a public statement piling praise on Castro’s regime.
“For better or for worse, the Cuban revolution is a very profound and very deep revolution. Much deeper than I had understood,” Sanders wrote. “More interesting than their providing their people with free health care, free education, free housing ... is that they are in fact creating a very different value system than the one we are familiar with.”

Republican ad makers are drooling

One could go on and talk about Sanders’ 10-day honeymoon in the Soviet Union in 1988. In a statement upon his return, he explained that “there are some things that (the Soviet Union does) better than we do and which were, in fact, quite impressive. Subway systems in Moscow costs 5 kopecs — or 7 cents. Faster, cleaner, more attractive and more efficient than any in the U.S. — and cheap.”

Never mind that the extraordinary Moscow subway system was constructed by Josef Stalin to demonstrate the superiority of the Soviet system. Never mind the draconian methods used to build it. Never mind that during his honeymoon in the Soviet Union, Russians were living through the death pangs of the bankrupt communist system.

How to lose: Democrats court doom by backing Bernie Sanders. His ideas are toxic outside blue America.

There is a reason South Carolina Republicans and conservatives are trying to help Sanders, and GOP ad makers are drooling at the prospect of running their man against him. With skeletons like these dangling in closets without doors, Sanders is destined to fail as a general election candidate, perhaps in a 49-state rout. (He might carry Vermont.)

Democratic voters take heed: Four more years of Trump will be a disaster from which the United States might never recover. Whatever the polls say now, in a general election contest, Donald Trump will eat Crazy Bernie for breakfast, before consuming a Big Mac.

William Webster, the only man to head both the CIA and the FBI, someone known to be extraordinarily careful with his words, is warning of a “dire threat to the rule of law in the country I love.”

If the Senate fails to convict and remove Trump, the outcome of our struggles will hinge on an election in which one side will have been effectively granted a license to cheat, a license that can be used again and again. Criminality will be rewarded and law-abiding behavior punished. Grievous injury will have been inflicted on our democracy and with it the cause of democracy around the world.

Sanders Supporters Dumbfounded as Chuck Todd Quotes Bulwark Article Calling Them Literal Nazis

https://www.redstate.com/streiff/202...literal-nazis/

No one ever accused Chuck Todd of being anything other than a low-wattage Democrat party apparatchik. That lack of talent and the desperation seeping into the Democrat establishment as more and more of the Democrat base are ‘feeling the Bern’ was on full display.

Today on MSNBC’s Meet the Press Daily (who knew such a thing even existed or that anyone wanted it to exist), Todd used–and this is so delicious–a post by somebody in Bill Kristol’s nasty little vanity site, The Bulwark, to attack Bernie Sanders supporters. Supposedly this post castigated Bernie Sanders supporters for using the same online tactics as Trump supporters but, naturally, found the Sanders supporters to me morally superior (I am not making that up).

This is the take from RawStory

More Ways Trump Is Winning and the Left is Seething -- US Carbon Emissions Fell in 2019

Here is old Sleepy Eyes:
[Washington Post columnist Ruth Marcus], we have all been on the receiving end of the Bernie online brigade. Here’s what [Jonanthan Last] says, no other candidate has anything like this digital brown shirt brigade except for Donald Trump. The question is this, ‘What if you can’t win the presidency without an online mob? What if we live where having an a bullying, aggro social media online army popping anyone who sticks their head up, is an ingredient for or a critical marker of success?”
A little bit of commonsense would have led a rational man to not use ‘brownshirts’, even in quote form, when referring to the supporters of the only (AFAIK) Jewish candidate in the race. I mean you expect quasi-literate stuff like that out of The Bulwark but you expect people who are billed as top tier journalists to know better. What is funny is that The Bulwark, which has been fluffing the left like nobody’s business in their search for relevance, gets a pass on the Nazi metaphor because the left still thinks that they are basically Nazis themselves and no one is surprised when they do it.

The Sandersistas were not amused:
.@chucktodd on MSNBC just read off a quote from an article calling us Bernie's online brown shirt brigade and I nearly wrecked my car. I had to pull over. This attack is not ok! Bernie Sanders is, Jewish and comparing us to Hitler's brown shirts makes me sick to my stomach!

Last year @chucktodd admonished @AOC for accurately calling the concentration camps on our border "concentration camps." Now he's quoting someone comparing Bernie supporters to Nazis. Feels like a dangerous time to be so misinformed about Holocaust historyhttps://t.co/P1w7fxXb4r https://t.co/GmBXRk3eO7

"Digital brown shirt brigade."
That's how our Jewish candidate's supporters are being described on the MSM.
The contempt shown for ordinary people is really something. https://t.co/Nu6CP9fAMq

Just some thoughts.

The Bernie Sanders base is getting a first had taste of what Donald Trump supporters have had to put up with for nearly four years. The Democrat establishment loathes them and only listens to them to gull them into voting for the “adults in the room.” We, on the right, feel your pain. We’ve given the Congress to the GOP twice, in 2010 and 2014, by mobilizing to elect people who would not pee on us if we were on fire. Get used to the feeling because that feeling is not going away until you start demanding a return on your investment.

By the way, Sanders supporters, your #firechucktodd hashtag campaign trending may make you feel powerful but you’re just fooling yourself. You’re not. NBC brass is chuckling, if you will, and shaking their heads at you guys. Todd will come out tomorrow or the next day…maybe…with some kind of mealy mouthed ‘sorry you were offended’ non-apology.

For Todd to equate Sanders supporters to Trump supporters is a pretty amazing thing as it shows the heat that Sanders is bringing on the Democrat establishment. What remains a mystery is why anyone thinks treating Sanders supporters as rabid curs is going to work any better than GOP candidates doing that to Trump supporters in 2016.

how is trump damaging democracy?

I've wondered about this claim...

from what I've seen. He's within the parameters of his presidency. perhaps, he went a little further than most on somethings.

I haven't seen anything where the violations were obvious threat to democracy.

his obnoxious behavior is different than most. but that is nothing new. Andrew Jackson was said to be obnoxious too.

This broke a few days ago apparently but it’s worth posting now as former FBI Director Jim Comey plays Sergeant Schultz (look it up, millennials) and claims to know nothing about about how the Steele dossier made its way through the FBI or who he himself briefed on it.

But the author of that dossier, former British spy Christopher Steele, is being a bit more forthcoming about his work on the dossier that was used to obtain FISA warrants to spy on Trump associates and has now been determined to have never — read that again: never — been verified as true.

In fact Steele admitted in court that Hillary Clinton’s law firm “Perkins Coie wanted to be in a position to contest the results [of the 2016 election] based on evidence he unearthed on the Trump campaign conspiring with Moscow on election interference.”

Anti-Trump dossier author was hired to help Hillary challenge 2016 election results

British ex-spy Christopher Steele, who wrote the Democrat-financed anti-Trump dossier, said in a court case that he was hired by a Democratic law firm in preparation for Hillary Clinton challenging the results of the 2016 presidential election.

He said the law firm Perkins Coie wanted to be in a position to contest the results based on evidence he unearthed on the Trump campaign conspiring with Moscow on election interference.

His scenario is contained in a sealed Aug. 2 declaration in a defamation law suit brought by three Russian bankers in London. The trio’s American attorneys filed his answers Tuesday in a libel lawsuit in Washington against the investigative firm Fusion GPS, which handled the former British intelligence officer.

In an answer to interrogatories, Mr. Steele wrote: “Fusion’s immediate client was law firm Perkins Coie. It engaged Fusion to obtain information necessary for Perkins Coie LLP to provide legal advice on the potential impact of Russian involvement on the legal validity of the outcome of the 2016 US Presidential election.

“Based on that advice, parties such as the Democratic National Committee and HFACC Inc. (also known as ‘Hillary for America’) could consider steps they would be legally entitled to take to challenge the validity of the outcome of that election.”
The Democrats never filed a challenge, but Mr. Steele’s answer suggested that was one option inside the Clinton camp, which funded Mr. Steele’s research along with the Democratic National Committee.

The U.S. intelligence community concluded that Moscow interfered in the election by hacking Democratic Party computers and stealing emails that it released via WikiLeaks.

No Trump associate has been charged with collusion.

In a previous court filing in a second case in April-May 2017, Mr. Steele said his job was to find links between Trump associates and Moscow.

Hired by Fusion in June 2016, he wrote a 17-memo dossier alleging a “extensive conspiracy” between the two, which two years later hasn’t been proven publicly by special counsel Robert Mueller or Congress.

In his most recent London court filing, Mr. Steele is defending against a libel lawsuit by citing a discredited story about a computer server, Trump Tower and a Russian bank.

The suit was brought by three Russian oligarchs who control Moscow’s Alfa Bank. Mr. Steele, under the dossier heading of election interference, accused them of paying cash bribes to Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The bankers — Mikhail Fridman, Petr Aven and German Khan — also sued Fusion GPS.

The case was dismissed by a D.C. Superior Court judge. Lawyers filed an appeal in U.S. District Court and attached Mr. Steele’s August declarations given in the London court.

“Internet traffic data suggested that a computer server of an entity in which the Claimants have an interest, Alfa Bank, had been communicating with a computer server linked to the Trump Organization,” Mr. Steele stated.

His goal was to show that his unverified dossier was correct when he wrote of an “extensive conspiracy.”

But the server story has fallen into the “fake news” category by most accounts.

When it began appearing on social media in 2016, some online sleuths looked at the server’s IP address and other data. They traced the server to a location outside Philadelphia that spewed marketing spam.

A Trump Organization official told The Washington Times last year that some of the spam went to Alfa Bank employees who perhaps stayed in Trump hotels. That’s how Alfa turned up in some emails.

The New York Times investigated and said the FBI basically came to the same conclusion.

Mr. Steele didn’t mention the server theory in the dossier itself.

Fusion GPS co-founder Glenn R. Simpson did try to sell the idea to the Justice Department, despite The New York Times’ finding. He met with then-Associate Deputy Attorney General Bruce Ohr.

Trying to prompt an investigation, Mr. Simpson told him the Times story was wrong and the server was used for direct communication, according to Mr. Ohr’s notes turned over to Congress.

In his court filing, Mr. Steele sought to show cronyism between Trump and the bank by noting that Alfa hired then-private attorney Brian Benczkowski to investigate the server allegation.

Mr. Benczkowski is now assistant attorney general in charge of the Justice Department’s Criminal Division, having won Senate confirmation in a near-party line vote.

Fusion GPS, in defending against the Russians’ libel lawsuit, depicts the three men as corrupt Putin cronies.

Mr. Steele faces a second defamation suit in London, this one from Russian entrepreneur Aleksej Gubarev, owner of XBT Holdings and provider of computer servers to thousands of clients.

In his final December 2016 dossier memo, Mr. Steele accused Mr. Gubarev of actually performing the hacking on Democratic computers under duress from Russian intelligence. He said in a court filing that the allegation came from unsolicited call-ins.

Mr. Gubarev said the allegations are made up. In Florida, he also is suing BuzzFeed, the news website that published the entire dossier in January 2017.
