Be forewarned, this is gonna be a little rant...
Does anyone else remember when the express check-out lane was actually faster? It drives me nuts every time I go into Walmart or Kroger and I'm standing on the express line for 20 minutes with two items in my hand while there's some family in front or me with a shopping cart overflowing with items, 3 of them missing tags, a rain check, an gift card, and handful of coupons, being rung up by the worlds slowest cashier.
Am I the only one who remembers express lines were cash only? When ten items meant TEN ITEMS and the mangers put the fastest checkers on them? I even remember one Tom Thumb I used to shop at that used to post someone between the 2 express lines to check carts before you got the belt.
Sigh, I miss those days.
Can I join in your rant for a moment? Ahem...
I hate Wal-Mart. Hate, hate, hate it. It's a bitch, too, because they have really good prices on groceries and other various sundries, but I would rather go to the DMV than Wal-Mart.
The average Wal-Mart has seventy lanes or so, but they never open more than ten of them unless it's Christmas...then they open fifteen. Don't even get me started on the 'express' lanes! I have also learned that self-check out goes smoothly, on average, once every three visits.
I remember cash-only express lanes and miss them dearly... <sigh>

Lets expand the rant. How ya enjoying those express lanes on the freeway nowadays?
If I am in Walmart, and if it is before midnight. I goto electronics since they can check you out, even if you got produce.
Sort of jumping on the rant......FUCK Walmart in general.
I Hate Wally World... I'd rather get a prostate exam then go into one....
I am with all of yall on this one.
I agree. Even if I'm one item over the limit, I go to the regular check out lanes. Doesn't seem to take much longer. I avoid Wal-Mart as much as possible.
They waste my time. And I want to spend that time with, oh, I dunno, say a sexy lady I've had my eye on.
and, of course, nothing says "customer service" than self-checkout lanes. I try to hit Kroger or Tom Thumb at somewhat off hours and it seems like the choices are a) the self-checkout, or b) the express lane, where the person will wave me over and say "It's OK" and start checking me out, even though I've got a cart full. That's usually when Sudzny shows up behind me with 2 items, lol.
To give proper credit when due, I was actually in an express lane at Wally World the other day, and the cashier turned a woman around who was "over the limit". I almost tripped over my jaw.

Her reason? "They Don't fit" Well they did when you bought the pack! She yelled and argued for over 20 minutes before they finally just gave her a gift card. And then she's probably the same lady complaining about how expensive stuff has gotten at Costco
I hate it too... and I try to go at odd times when it's not going to be crowded. To add, I hate the person who whips out the check book and takes five minutes to write a check. It's 2010... get a check card already!
Another pet peeve... when I am at the ATM (drive through or walk up) and the person in front of me decides to take care of ALL their banking needs right then! Just get cash and go... if you need to do a deposit, do it inside!

I mean Night shift workers need to deposit paychecks too, but if it's 11:00am on a Tuesday and you pull up to the ATM with a stack of Business Deposits, you need to be slapped.
I'm probably gonna get flak for this comment but, cash or card people PLZ!!!! I hate those check writers, or at least while they checking your stuff fill out the check!!!! Your gonna have to fill it out anyway!!!!! gosh I that!!!!!!!!!!!

What does everyone else here think about the ATM's that don't use an envelope for deposits?
They make you feed checks in, one at a time, and they attempt to read the amount on the check. My beef, is that I typically have to feed a check into the thing 3 times, before it recognizes the amount... even then it seems like about 30% of the time it just won't recognize the check. The checks are machine generated, so the character recognition should not be that difficult. The other thing is that it takes the stinkin thing a good 30 seconds or so to decide if it can read the check.
I had one machine generated check so I stood in line at B of A rather than use the ATM to make my deposit. The lady at the window offered that I could have saved time by using the ATM. I told her that I hated the new deposit system that doesn't use an envelope. It may save them time, but it wastes mine.
