I've heard the same thi.several times...only to see everyone go on their own way again once the immediate sense of loss & grief has passed.

I know exactly what you are talking about.
About 30 years ago, my uncle, who was the unofficial patriarch of our family was diagnosed with cancer. I spent a great deal of time in contacting the various nephews and niece. The niece and I were virtually inseparable when younger.
Our meeting with our uncle was almost like a duty that was required rather than a family gathering.
My greatest regret in life has been since that time that we let ourselves get too busy to allow our family ties keep us together.
I hope that you will not make the same mistake.
