ROCHESTER, N.Y. (AP) — A statue of abolitionist Frederick Douglass was ripped from its base in Rochester on the anniversary of one of his most famous speeches, delivered in that city in 1852.

The statue was found at the brink of the Genesee River gorge about 50 feet from its pedestal, police said. There was damage to the base and a finger.
In Rochester on July 5, 1852, Douglass gave the speech “What to the Slave is the Fourth of July,” in which he called the celebration of liberty a sham in a nation that enslaves and oppresses its Black citizens.
To a slave, Douglass said, Independence Day is “a day that reveals to him, more than all other days in the year, the gross injustice and cruelty to which he is the constant victim.”
Carvin Eison, a leader of the project that brought the Douglass statue to the park, told the Rochester Democrat & Chronicle another statue will take its place because the damage is too significant.
"Is this some type of retaliation because of the national fever over confederate monuments right now? Very disappointing, it’s beyond disappointing,” Eison told WROC.


And just why do the Radical protestors destroy Frederick Douglass statue?????
are they so ignorant of history and what Douglass stood for and did in his life??

Why would white supremacists care about Frederick Douglass? Why do we care about the opinion of a couple hundred people out of 330 million.

Frederick Douglas wasn't even African. Today Blacks are no longer slaves. If Blacks were still slaves would we have all these protests and Black on Black crime in our major cities? Blacks have made great progress over the years but they still continue to fight for an unseen enemy in oppression and racism. If Blacks are still being oppressed as much as they rally about "Jim Crow Laws" would still be in affect.

ok I have to admit I would have torn down a statue back in the day

in may 2019 though, from what I understand, finally the city quietly took it down

it stood for about 36 years

an awkward, misshapen, caricature of samuel gompers - the afl cio father

the lady "sculptor" said we weren't looking at it correctly

you had to stand right next to it and look up at him, then the perspective was right she claimed

only trouble was , you could've stood anywhere and it still looked like a 5th grader clay modeling project

the city council were/are weasels and it was a union thing, so there it stood, a laughing-stock of a monstrosity in downtown san antonio
