The Media Speaks Out

Scathing editorial on Trudeau and his use of emergency powers.

Wall Street Journal:

Trudeau’s Destructive ‘Emergency’ - The truckers protest could have been handled without abusing the law.

Mr. Trudeau criminalized a protest movement, deputizing financial institutions, without due process or liability, to find and freeze personal accounts of blockaders and anyone who helps them. These extraordinary measures are a needless abuse of power.

Financial Times:

Canada’s illiberal response to protesters - Ottawa’s Freedom Convoy occupation has been mishandled by the authorities

The right to such protest is fundamental to a free society. Such protests often involve inconveniencing people, whether that means the pickets of striking workers, Britain’s anti-climate change group Extinction Rebellion, or the Freedom Convoy."

National Post:

Trudeau's wild misuse of state authority - Are there no hero MPs willing to denounce this gross usurpation of citizens' rights?

Jonathon Turley:

While Canada is not sending away people for 20 years like Cuba, it is clearly seeking to use these emergency powers to chill the exercise of free speech and associational rights. The Canadian government has assembled a blacklist of citizens to have their accounts frozen while blocking support for the movement. It is all meant to intimidate those who want to speak and associate freely

The sense of impunity by Trudeau is understandable. The media has largely echoed his attacks on the truckers and supported his use of these powers despite the clear threat to free speech and associational rights. We have a de facto state media where the government reasonably expects media and social media to reinforce its message — and effectively silence its critics. To raise questions about these measures is to invite attack.

Glenn Greenwald - The core value of civil liberties is they apply equally to everyone regardless of ideology, but western liberals no longer believe in that framework - they don’t recognize rights to dissent for their adversaries - and many have stopped even pretending
