Whole article is here: https://www.nytimes.com/2019/04/13/t...-tracking.html but you have to go into NY Times site to see. It explains how to download your Google Location History which will show your massive Web & App activity that Google collects on everything you search and do.

To review all of your Location History, you can download your data from Google. To do that, go to Takeout.Google.com and select Location History. You can follow a similar procedure to download your Web & App Activity on that page.

Your Location History data will appear in computer code. If you can’t read code, you can select the “JSON” format and put the file into a text editor to see what it looks like.

Did that and WOW was amazed at all the data there.

You can disable the data collection. Instructions are given but some stuff can't be stopped.

Yes. This feature has been on for a very long time. Unfortunately, not a lot of people are aware of it.
While we are on this topic of tracking, I will also add:

[1] The OS (both andriod and apple) also keeps history of your wifi connections. So even if you turn off location history, and your "connect automatically" wifi connection is on, your location can be tracked by following the wifi hotspots your phone was connected to.
[2] Doing google search on your phone will automatically register your dynamic IP which can be backtracked to the WIFI connection that was used.

The only way I know to avoid tracking is by hardware interrupt. That is, not to carry the phone physically with me. Because it is super inconvenient, I rarely do it and tolerate being tracked.
If you've watched any police shows lately like First 48 you can see how cops use your phone as a homing device. They can track the phone's location based on the different towers that it beams off of.
I went thru that a few years ago. Texting to a sp, car pulls up and asked who I was texting. Said my gf, he left. This was in an empty parking lot. Now, Only use burner phone and use it for 90 days, get a new one.
