The Air Force, Army, Marines, Navy, Seabees (U.S. Navy Construction Battalions – ‘C.B.s’ hence ‘Seabees’ – are part of the Navy; not separate from it), Coast Guard, FBI, GI Bill, Interstate Highway System and NASA are all elements of national defense – ‘a military force’ – which is explicitly required by the Constitution. Furthermore, if you were to read your socialist manifestos more closely, you’ll notice socialists stand against such institutions and organizations because, in the eyes of the ardent socialists, such institutions and organizations are the tools of the ‘capitalist oppressors’.

BTW, the Pony Express was a private, capitalistic enterprise, and Salk’s work was the product of research funded by a charitable organization: not the state.
