I am having to euthanize my almost 20 year old cat. The big fella has had a good life and unfortunately had it not been for him being exposed to a rescue kitty that had a deadly virus he probably would have lived a few more years.
The kitten I adopted over the summer perished with what is called FIP, Feline Infectious Peritonitis. It only shows when they are in crisis and it is too late. The vet assured me that since Simon had not shown symptoms that he should be fine. However, 6 months later it has happened.
Lesson learned, I will never again adopt a feral animal, rescue or not. Simon is not just a pet, he grew up with my children. I am having to do this today without them knowing.
I just want to make other cat owners and lovers aware of this disease if you weren't already. I had no idea. Had I known, I would have never let the kitten in my home. I thought I was doing a good thing.
Cheers to Simon, he was a good cat. Mean, moody, loving, insane stalker that damn cat, aka fatass, but he was faithful. Even those times he moved to the neighbors house because they fed him, he still came home to me. Probably the most loyal male in my life. lol.
I never thought I would love an animal just as I love a human being. Its truly a sad day.
I'm sorry you have to do such a hard thing Chella. I have rescued many strays over the years and also exposed my 3 of my cats of many years to FIP and FeLV. I had to have 2 of them put down so far because of those rotten viruses the rescues gave to them and I still feel guilty about it. I have a big heart and can't turn down an animal in need though so I still foster and rescue strays. I am sorry for your loss.
{my son had three cats that all had feline leukemia.....each one died at two month intervals except one......the doc says he has five months to five years to live........it is spread between cats only}
I am so sorry Chella.....my heart goes out to you!
Sorry to hear that Chella....
Sorry Chella. Pets are so special, it sucks to loose one.
sorry to hear about fat cat sweetie. I'll miss giving him bootie scratches!
My heart goes out to you.
Hope you have a better weekend sugar!
Thank you to everyone, he went peacefully in my arms, with a faint meow at the end. He is buried under an oak tree in the country, with logs on top to keep other animals from digging him up. He had befriended a raccoon of all things that is visiting me every night in the back yard. Scary fella, I hope he finds a new friend soon and stops coming by.
Not sure if I will be on here for the next few days, karma kicked my ass the last few weeks and right now in the process of a new car, and since I had an exclusion clause, insurance is denying the claim. Dont know about anyone else, but 2013 totally sucked. I wish I could sleep through the next month and wake up to a new year.
Have a safe and Happy Thanksgiving everyone.
xoxo
