Nina: The organization known as the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) was formally established in 1984. "Mother I'd Like to F#ck" (MILF) entered the popular lexicon, apparently with the movie American Pie in 1999; though, there are examples of it being used as early as 1995. But like you, I learned of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front years after after I'd learned the more colloquial meaning.
EDIT TO ADD: BTW, I recently learned that the term “Moro” as used in the Philippines, was introduced by the Spanish in the 16th century. A portion of the Filipino population were already Islamist when Magellan “discovered” the archipelago in 1521. The Spanish referred to the Filipino Islamist as “Moros” just as they had for centuries used the same term to refer the Islamist Moors from Northwest Africa who had conquered the Iberian Peninsula in the 8th century.
Another interesting acronym is CINCUS, pronounced "sink us". It stood for Commander-in-Chief, United States Fleet. This title was disposed of and officially replaced by COMINCH (for "Commander-in-Chief", U.S. Navy) in December 1941 – immediately after Pearl Harbor – for obvious reasons.
