In political jargon, useful idiot is a pejorative term used to describe people perceived as propagandists for a cause whose goals they do not understand, who are used cynically by the leaders of the cause

The term implies that if the person being used was aware of the true nature of the cause he's serving he would no longer support the cause.

Tom Hanks has his own production company (Playtone). He has produced or co-produced several major movies and HBO series. He writes and directs. He is far from an idiot. Hanks is participating in the left's cause with his eyes wide open, fully aware of, and in support of the left's cause. He knows exactly what he's doing.

Tom Hanks is no more a useful idiot than Saul Alinski was. The people that watch Hank's movies and put money in his pocket are the useful idiots.

The founding fathers wrote the Federalist Papers in order to convince the states that they should ratify the constitution. From your point of view the Federal Papers were propaganda. Robert Redford has been busy. His movie “The Conspirator” was an obvious swipe at Guantanamo and Military Tribunals. But in presenting the trial of Mary Surratt, Redford had to clumsily rewrite history to fit his agenda. Plus, there was his anti-Afghanistan war movie, “Lions for Lambs”.
