You should also look very closely at the policy definition of disability, especially after 12 months (some policies 24 months). Generally, although not on all policies, you have to be disabled from doing any kind of remunerative work at all, not just your usual occupation. That is a very high standard to meet. Then there are often requirements that you apply for Social Security Disability and provisions that require that any SSI benefits be offset against policy benefits. That means that you have to buy that much more coverage to actually get a good policy, particularly if you qualify for a decent amount of SSI.
