This should not attract any negative remarks from the nattering nebobs of negativism. Take away the PR, the electronics, and the hype who do you think has the greatest female voice of all times?

My choices (in no particular order)

Pat Benatar
Debbie Harry
Annie Lennox
Patsy Cline
Patti Lebelle

Fully agree with:
Janis Joplin
Pat Benatar
Ann Wilson
Christina Aguilera (when she shows a little restraint)
Kathleen Turner (may not be a singer, but in her day, her voice was smoldering)

Some others that I am quite found of:
Johnette Nopalitano of Concrete Blonde Fame
Sarah McLachlan
Cheryl Crow
Lucinda Williams (one of the most expressive voices I have ever heard)
Bonnie Raitt

I like women's voices that are both lower in register and have a little wear and tear that shows their character.

Jeez, am I in the right place? No question:

1. Billie Holliday
2. Ella Fitzgerald
3. Sarah Vaughn
4. Diana Krall
5. Stacey Kent

Years ago I saw Ella in concert with Oscar Peterson and Joe Pass. It still sends shivers down my spine. No comparison!

Ditto to perhaps every woman listed thus far, with the exception of Alisson Krauss who's nasal twang and poor breath control make me want to hurl.

Sarah Brightman tops my list, and her sister Amanda runs a very close second.

I would also add:

Bonnie Raitt
Mary Chapin Carpenter
Karen Carpenter
Stevie Nicks
Loreena McKennit (google Dantes Prayer)

Have to agree with Loreena McKennit and Sarah Brightman (though I find her hands distracting)

I would like to add Tina Turner to the list if she is not already there.

What? No Judy Garland, Liza, or Madonna?
