I recommend All the Shah's Men by Stephen Kinzer. It's a bit of an eye opener. Basically the dirty dealing was by the Anglo Persian Oil Company which is now - surprise - BP and the British government. We stupidly propped up the last coup and let the Shah in the country for treatment. Carter was so stupid.

Personally, I think they hate us because we are such a big target. and fun to hate. I don't know, maybe it makes the Iranians feel like bigger dogs to have the Big Dog as their enemy. I wonder if they are enjoying their embargo. It seems to be effective.

Wilber's book, Regime Change in Iran: Overthrow of Premier Mossadeq November 1952 – August 1953. Nottingham: Spokesman. 2006. No, I read it years ago. I can't be trusted in a book store. When I go, I set a limit of books or dollar amount. Otherwise I'd need a dolly to carry all the books.

During our Iraq "invasion"....there was so much press of how dare the Iranians support and teach Iraqis methods in attacking our US troops.

Of course, both my heart and voice, felt sadden and wrong that our Boys were suffering.

But in terms of big picture, I made the exact same arguement that was presented
in this video. How would we feel if Iran had thousands of troops in both Mexico and Canada making regime changes.

Would we have sat on sidelines....I think not.

Obvious answer, Syria has a far more modern military. But what are your thoughts on these individual decisions????

vk, I saw a poster that showed exploding bombs in a middle eastern town. The caption was, "Don't worry, that's just democracy raining down."

Libya was a waste of time and money, and so will Syria. These wars are fought to protect oil interests and to enrich the defense industry. They are also fought to unite the population against a common enemy, which means the government will have a greater opportunity to manipulate and control. Look at what has happened since 9-11. We have the Patriot Act, TSA groping, warrantless wiretaps, government surveillance, "See something, say something", SOPA, and finally, the NDAA of 2011 which authorizes the President to indefinitely detain American citizens on American soil without due process or habeas corpus. This effectively eliminates our Constitutional rights, and makes us a police state. No due process means there is no mechanism in place for you to contest your detention, no standards of evidence or right to hearing. So essentially, the President can use the US military against civilians, and there is nothing anyone can do to proclaim innocence.

But as long as the brown guys are our enemy, we let the government get away with taking our liberty in order to ensure our security. As Ben Franklin once said, when a country does that, it will soon "have neither liberty nor security."

Interesting thoughts...we have had our disagreements in other Sandbox discussions...but we are definitely on the same page here

Current events in Iran have very little to do with pror regimes in Iran and everything to do with Iran's hatred for Israel.

Accept Israel as a legitimate neighbor you don't profess to destroy, and the world economies wont give a damn what your internal politics are.
