Yesterday I went to the Merle Hay AMP, just for the massage. The girl was young and sort of pretty. Usually they don't talk much, but she asked if I was working that day and what my name was. Then she told me her name and said, "Today is my birthday."
Then she said she wanted to get an ice cream cake and if I knew where to get one.
Now she could speak little english and these were not complete sentences. She was just communicating these ideas to me the best way she could.
Then she asked if I could drive her (steering wheel pantomime with her hands) to get an ice cream cake. I said I would. She giggled and sort of did a happy dance as she continued my massage. She asked me a lot of questions like was I married, how many children I had, was I a grandfather. After she was done, she spoke into her iPhone in Chinese then showed me the screen.
It said, "Now you have time to acconpany me to get ice cream cake."
I nodded yes and another happy dance ensued. She went out to explain to Mama San what she was doing. Mama didn't seem crazy about the idea but she must have been telling her, he's a grandpa and he didn't try to molest me during the massage.
So she went with me and I drove her to Culver's on 86th St. She said, "You can get ice cream cake here?"
When we went in she looked all around like she was just amazed. I showed her the ice cream cakes in the freezer. There was Oreo, Turtle and Brownie Blast. She picked Turtle and paid for it. More happy dance back to the car. It was very cute, she was so excited. Riding back to the massage place she was quiet and sat upright, stone still. Probably wondering if now I was going to kidnap her.
We pulled into the parking lot and she became animated and excited again. She gave me a hug and jumped out. She kept stopping and waving at me, saying thank you, thank you, all the way into the house.
It was really fun to make her day. Maybe she'll make mine someday.
