I have read about Google voice and about certain apps one can get for smartphones that allow users to use other phone numbers (much like a burner phone) to disguise their real numbers. My question though is are there apps or do these apps do the same and allow you to send text that mask your real number.

Google voice assigns you a new number. When you call or text, the new number is displayed.
