This is funny. I like this guy!
From the article:
January 1, 2012: Austin police forcefully harm a woman during a traffic stop. A long haired hippie looking guy takes pictures of their abuse. Long hair dude gets arrested and they make him take a breathalyzer.
Turns out long hair hippie dude is actually Antonio Buehler, an education professional who was a 100% sober designated driver.
Turns out he was correct in thinking he had the legal right to photograph the police in a public place. It's been upheld as a First Amendment right by a little thing called the Supreme Court.
Whoops.
Oh yeah, turns out the "hippie" is also a West Point graduate, an Iraq and Kosovo veteran and former officer as well as a Stanford grad.
Whoops.
Hippie dude decided to fight the police in court. He also worked with local activists to start the Peaceful Streets Project which leads a small army of volunteers who film the police in action on a regular basis and spread information about police abuses. He received notice of the National Press Photographers Association and others.
Whoops.
In other words, he's become a bad cop's worst nightmare.
Moral of the story: police, do the right thing please. Leave good people alone and do your job. Stop bad officers who harm your name. The next person they wrongfully harass might be another Antonio Buehler. Citizens, remember it's not the fighting overseas which "keeps us free" it's fighting for our rights here. Those who do so are the real heroes.
