"Voting machines in more than one-third of all Detroit precincts registered more votes than they should have during last month's presidential election, according to Wayne County records prepared at the request of The Detroit News," according to a report today in the Detroit newspaper. "Detailed reports from the office of Wayne County Clerk Cathy Garrett show optical scanners at 248 of the city's 662 precincts, or 37 percent, tabulated more ballots than the number of voters tallied by workers in the poll books."
And while the problem of potential ballot stuffing was the worst in Detroit, it was bad all over the state: "Overall, state records show 10.6 percent of the precincts in the 22 counties that began the retabulation process couldn't be recounted because of state law that bars recounts for unbalanced precincts or ones with broken seals."
The Detroit News is (rightly) careful not to speculate about what's going on here. But given the high degree of irregularities in Detroit specifically and that city's illustrious history of Democratic corruption, if it is determined that there was ballot stuffing going on here, odds are it's not going to have been an effort to elect Donald Trump.
Democrats have long been dismissive of the possibility of electoral fraud to the point of absurdity. Worse, they've used it as a cudgel to call GOP proponents of voter ID laws racist. However, Michigan was decided in the presidential election by less than 10,000 votes with these kinds of irregularities. Doing more to ensure fair elections seems like it's warranted.
Of course, now Democrats are complaining about electoral fraud coming from other sources. Republicans and Democrats agree that the possibility of Russian hacking should be investigated. But in the short-term, it would probably be more productive for Democrats to demonstrate their commitment to clean elections by taking a long hard look in the mirror and seeing if they need to root out corruption in their own party in Michigan.
