McCain was not to do anything for his base to chose a moderate like Romney, Huckabee, or a few others. He needed to do something to wake things up. He needed an conservative that the evangelical crowd would like. They did not vote for him in the primaries. He chose a woman who was conservative, exciting, and appealed the evangelicals.
