Don't know about it being a 'gay thing'. Mostly used by models for men's magazines or wherever anal display is needed.
It supposedly contains emollients to soothe and satisfy while lightening the darker skin.

Have known several stippers in San Antonio who have admitted/bragged about positive results. And, I was offered in-person displays by a couple. Anus looked OK, but w/o a prior to treatment comparison, unknown to me exactly what effect.
