Here's another news (NY TIMES) item from today. Person with ambiguous genitalia in Australia has won the right to declare this on demographic registration forms.

My understanding is that there are several anatomic variants of ambiguous genitalia. And these conditions are not uncommon--just not publicly disclosed very often. If you are interested in more detail type the phrase"ambiguous genitalia: in Google Images. Here's an example:
