My friend wants to play in a poker tourney to gain entrance into the World Poker tournament in LAs vegas
is there a satellite tournament he can play in here? or does he need to go to vegas to do that?
thanks
Long road to free entry to the main event... If he is good enough to think he has a chance at winning an entry then he should be good enough to pony up the 10g entry. It is probably too late to satellite in this year.

There are some poker clubs that offer WSOP entry as prize winnings -
usually through point standings over the course of a predefined ‘season' similar to Sprint or FedEx series with a multitude of events. This late in the year, it'll take more than luck to catch the leader. Perhaps an impossibility, even.

Ameristar had a tv broadcast tourney back in Jan.
Heartland poker tour.
Ameristar, Hollywood & Harrahs run their own tourneys frequently.
Point is that he needs a bankroll and needs to simply play, as others have mentioned, untill he does earn a spot. He should really practice local to determine how good he actually is. And, btw, folks at the local tables are pretty good. He might consider a bit of practice with a small bankroll. They'll do their best to take it.
Yep. I imagine it would take 60 hours of tournament to maybe have a slim chance of winning a free spot. Anyone can buy in for 10g. It is something I would like to do some day. However the poker bug has left me.

well, what about in vegas?
how would I find out? bankroll is not an issue and playing time is a bit overboard, just need to get him in a spot in vegas.

World Series of Poker
and
World Poker Tour
both have their own web sites that list buy-ins, preregistrations, qualifying tourneys, etc.
From what I know, you just show up with cash in hand. I dont think they cap entries but there might be an entry deadline. Prob more info about how to sign up on the wsop site.
Anyway, the big WSOP tournament was about a month ago. There are actually about 65 tournaments in that event with all sorts of poker games and buy ins ranging from 500 to 10000. You could literally live in Vegas for a month and play in 20-30 tournaments.

BCPL, Think Harrah's poker room here runs a mini-satellite once or twice a month for a seat in the World Series of Poker. Now it would be playing for next years WSOP. Think the cost of entry is $200, and sells out a day or so in advance. That would be the simplest and most efficient way to qualify. Think they start with 10 tables of 10 players. They split into two sessions of 5 tables each, usually on separate days. The winner of each table earns a seat in the final table, and the winner there wins a $10,000 entry into the WSOP in LV, and $1000 in travel expenses. The second and third place winners win cash, but no entry. The format may have changes, so you should confirm this with the poker room here. Good luck to your friend!
