What are some things you did in college ( or as a college-age person) ? What would I find in your backpack ? Lol. Cigarettes? Crumbled up school work? a bunch of food? I think people may have some interesting things in there... lol. What shows did you watch? what did you do? I am interested! ( and bored) lol

Keira,

Pardon me for my presumption, but why bored? Assuming you are at Syracuse/SUNY, it has a great reputation, good teachers. Is there not one single area that challenges your curiosity? How antibiotics work, for example?

Or something closer to art: why are the salts derived from metals like copper, lead, mercury colored, from which pigments were made in times gone by? Why are more benign metals, like calcium, not have colored salts like those? If you were to write a research paper on the pigments used by the ancient Egyptians to paint their murals and the amount of science that has gone into understanding how they did what they did, you would just stun your class, and also find yourself absolutely fascinated by the history of art. The history of Egyptian glass, Roman glass, and ever so much art is intertwined with technological and scientific breakthroughs of those ages. Art and science were inseparable, just as art, architecture, warfare and science were part of the leading edge of technology. Why? Because the elites patronized all of these things!!!

They had the wealth, leisure and lifestyle to indulge in things like cosmetics, too. Another art form that comes down to our age and has enormous amounts of chemistry hidden within. How many people appreciate how much?

That make-up you treasure? What are the foundational dyes used in those? Do you ever wonder how does your skin and membranes react to each compound? Beyond membranes, how does your DNA interact with dyes and pigments made from complex organic compounds?

Should not every educated person who chooses to have an opinion know something about such issues and truly understand at least a few things in depth?

People have opinions on every subject, e.g. organic farming, GMOs, this, that and the other, and yet do not understand the least bit about the fundamentals!!

College is a great place to study some of the more unglamorous things that will impress employers and others no end. And will be ever so useful in areas too numerous to list. Thermodynamics, at least a nodding acquaintance of what this means and some literacy with numbers. The various meanings of Efficiency and Efficiencies, as understood in Thermodynamics; Systems and the 'Environment' ditto. Trust me, you will win plaudits for being familiar and comfortable with these concepts and for being able to work with them in real life situations.

Pardon me for talking out of turn.
