how do search members?

Is there way as a provider to search members? The only way I really know how to look at a members profile is if they have messaged me. But if someone contacts me by phone and not PM, Ive gone to the "search" button to look them up but it only searches if they have posted anything. And for those who are new who havent, I cant figure out how to get to their profile! Help please!
