Passing of a hero

Anyone who has watched Band of Brothers remembers Dick Winters who rose to command Easy Company and later became a Major.
On 2 January Richard Winters died in Pennsylvania. He joins Ronald Speirs (2007), Darrel "Shifty" Powers (2009), John Martin (2005), James Alley Jr. (2008) and Carwood Lipton (2001) who have all passed since the release of the mini-series.

Maj Dick Winters was a good, kind man. A warrior and a gentle soul. The book band of brothers documents how this man had just related the story of him charging up the side of that dyke in Holland, and how he shot as many as eight Germans in the line of duty in that one battle alone. The point is how he was talking to Stephen Ambrose and then related how there was a damaged waterfowl on his property that he knew was suffering. Ambrose stated that he could always just shoot it. Dick just said "Oh no, I couldn't do that."

A kind and gentle man, a true citizen soldier, a warrior. As was said of Lincoln, "Now he is for the ages."

He died of complications from Parkinson's at the age of 92. He died two weeks ago, and had directed his family not to tell anyone until well after the funeral.
