the arrest of musician Don Mclean, and the yahoo comments got me thinking.. seems like the Police often arrest people for minor, petty matters, yet the major criminals (murder, rape, robbery) who are arrested get freed quickly, only to repeat violent crimes again and again.

reading the Yahoo comments, one might suspect the usual stupid comments that accompany most internet stories, but this one contains a lot of comments and tales of personal stories of police "over-arresting", or other Governmental authority (like CPS) abuse .. anecdotally, it seems like virtually everyone I know has a personal story of an unnecessary arrest, and nobody I know thinks our criminal justice system deals harshly enough with "real" criminals.
