KC is one of the big up-and-coming foodie cities in America. If you can't find food here you aren't looking.
And there is always Chipotle, if you are brave. :-)

If you're staying on the Plaza and you're driving..... you're about ten minutes away from the some of the best barbecue on the planet..... and it's in a gas station.

LOL- not exactly any bad choices there.... except for getting hantavirus from LC's.
I find myself frequenting both Kansas City Joe's and Jack Stack depending upon what I am in the mood for although both handle the BBQ basics exceptionally well! I can definitively say that the beans and cheesy corn at Jack stack should be their own food groups!

My thoughts on KC BBQ

Smokehouse: I think it SUCKS but I haven't chanced it for years never impressed

LC's: Try it. but not with a it's hole really!!! have had great, good, and not so good brisket never thought the ribs were worth the money. overall I'd like it better if the Lenexa location were still open as I never need to go down Blue Parkway

BB's: RUN AWAY it's always a gamble but never exceptional, I have gotten sick there too. Shannon is a better promoter than restauranteur.

Woodyard: Go on a nice warm day and buy some smoker wood/ My favorite place for ribs especially on Sat. Fan of their brisket right up there with LC's

Gates: It's not bad not great but consistently decent if you like being yelled at!

Bryants: been eating downtown forever but past the tradition, I really think its just above mediocre but I have not been there recently.

Danny Edwards, I'd rather eat anywhere close such as Gates on Main, or down the road at Rosedale.

Q39: great for a date, change of pace but not a place I frequent or recommend. I had a smoked pork tenderloin sammie that put pulled pork to shame. I make my own varity of it at home.

Jack's Stack It is my "go to" BBQ joint as all their BBQ is great but so are things like the Rack of lamb and seafood. Been eating Jacks food since downtown Overland Park days. I haven't eaten at The Stack but have heard it is basically same as the old Smokestack

Joe's KC: this is right there with Jack's but I go to Jacks unless close to Mission road location which used to be Greens corner, Gas liquor and Alfa Romero repairs always come front of mind.

Honorable mention: Zarda's ribs can be dead on, sometimes.

I live in VA and the only good BBQ I get is what I make and will be smoking a Boston butt this weekend with ghost pepper rub. maybe pictures?
