Tax Question

I don't really know who to ask from people I know of. But...

Being a college student and tuition runs to about 10,000$, would I get money returned when taxes are done? If so, would a 1,000$ scholarship or any scholarships lower or raise the amount returned?

good tool for making estimates

Depends on quite a few things. If you are a first time student enrolled in undergraduate program, you will most likely qualify for a American Opportunity Credit which is up to 2500. and 1000 of that is refundable.

So you are likely to receive a $1000 refund so long as the income you report is 20000 or less.

Thank you for the information! Parents went to HR block today for a quota, but the lady they spoke to said she can't tell until they actually file the taxes...

BTW, I'm a second year.

Freshman or Sophomore doesn't matter. if this is your first under grad you should qualify for American Opportunity Credit

As long as the gross income you report is less than 20K, then that tax credit is enough to cover any taxes due, and you might get $1000 in a refund.

I guess I'll see what happens. Hopefully I get enough to cover for school tuition in the summer.
