Please ask to see a sample before letting someone do your site, even if it's for free. One recent attempt that I saw done for a friend was, um....well I would have paid the guy to take it down before leaving it up.
I paid a pro lots of $ for my new site (coming out tomorrow), and while i cant duplicate professional sites, I've realized that I can do a whole better myself than some of the recent attempts I've seen. I'll prepare a sample this weekend.

Absolutely.... any reputable designer will gladly provide examples of their work. Even if they just tinker with websites as a hobby.
Also make sure you are the owner of your domain/website (no pun intended) and change the passwords once the work is done so you know it's safe from anybody tampering with it.

I sent you a PM, I have been doing IT/Internet work for 27+ years. and Yes I have samples of my work 
Also I have several web servers (Actual physical servers, not some hosting plan) so I can even host it for you.
